Spina Bifida

A spina bifida is neural tube defect (NTD’s) i.e. incomplete closing of backbone and membrane around the spinal cord. It is mainly caused in new born baby’s due to the genetics and environmental factors. Around 1500-2000 babies are born with the spina bifida each year in the U.S. Distinct types of spina bifida are spina occult, meningocele, myelomeningocele. Spina bifida can be prevented by taking 400mcg of folic acid each day which could reduce neural tube defect up to 70%.
